Two news, one good and one bad ...

I'll start with the good one:

With the very hard work of Arkshine on our server security, I think we are on the right way to secure our server and so be able to still keep it for some time.

The bad news is that if nothing is done by July, the server will stop himself, for lack of funding. We will not have a savior like Eating Pizza every time. Great Thanks to him!!!

So I invite you to try to find solutions quickly (maybe look at crowfunding platforms).

What is certain is that I would not take care of it. It is therefore up to you to ensure that 17buddies continues or not ... It's your choice

If you find funding, I will continue to have a benevolent eye on the site and help if I can from time to time. Otherwise, I will let him die without any regret.

I can already see the "just do this; just do that". Please avoid this and if you have nothing concrete and solid to propose, go your way.

I invite you to create a special topic financing so do not continue on this one: jap:

Making a torrent of those files means downloading all 387Gb files (yes: 387 Gb), making a torrent (who wants to make such a big torrent ?) and upload it somewhere because I don't want to share my personal bandwidth with hundreds of peers.

We don't want to share your lastest 20Mb holidays pictures. We speak of 387 Gb zipped files !!

We are waiting for realistics suggestions...

https://archive.org

I`ve seen 30 - 40 GB archives on archive.org, But 387 Gb is far to large I think you would need to split them by game and maybe even alphabetically.

If you want I can contact valve and see if they are interested, its a long shot but worth a try.

QUOTE (Lanm @ 11/04/2017 - 00:41:47) *
I know that it sounds strange but:
1) Torrent clients are diversifying seeding i.e. ideally torrent client would upload 387 GB of data and then downloaded data will be redistributed by seeders, each will be distributing own downloaded chunk. You are basically uploading it, there is no difference: you can even limit number of connections and bandwidth and then you stop if you uploaded 400GB for example and check if everybody got a copy few days later and if there are holes in availability you seed some time again.
2) There are lots of people with big HDDs. I personally have 1 empty 1TB drive.
3) There are better compression methods likeLZMA2, Bzip2 (both available in 7zip).

Given how much feedback you have seen from people wanting to help you will easily replicate archive multiple times on seedboxes.

I can download 387GB in 57 hours through 15Mbit/s connection.

Downloading 300+ GiB of data throught BitTorrent with only one seed is near to impossible, no matter how much time you have and what's your connection speed.

Uploading it all to Internet Archive is an option but the current submission size limit is 10 GiB, if I recall correctly. Not sure whether there is a size limit to how much one account can upload.

In my opinion, the best option would be to find someone to host this data. GAMEBANANA is a good option. There's also CS-BG, a site which pops-up in first results when you search for Counter-Strike maps - I'm sure they'll be interested.

Also an option is to disable uploading and make a simple read-only archive from which everyone can download. An example of such would be Quaddicted (yes, right now you can upload new maps there, but users are also encouraged to make local backups of this archive).

In the end, if none of this is possible, at least release a simple plain-text list of all maps so people could manually find them on the web. Better to know the names of the maps we lost than nothing at all.

There is no specific magic in uploading 300GB of data to website which will fix "1 seed" problem. Pay specific attention to part (1) of my post.

Torrenting something is in almost no way worse than uploading to website.

Hey!

I get alerted with Quaddicted is mentioned on the web smile.gif

My french c'est non-existant et terrible and Google Translate really sucks so I could not understand most of this thread.

What I got:

You have ~1TB of game files that even compressed are still ~400GB? No problem (either way), I can provide you with an rsync endpoint to upload to and see to distribute it as torrent (seeded with 1GBit/s, zero issue with that size), ingest it into the Internet Archive or whatever you like. If it is CS and HL maps I would probably even just host them at Quaddicted in https://www.quaddicted.com/files/mirrors/ or something.

With your permission I would also make an web archive of these forums so that they are complete in the Wayback Machine?

If you are worried about code etc, you could also dump a copy of everything with me if you like. I have dumps of sensitive data here and there and treat them responsible (giving out things from cold storage only by reasonable and proven request).

There are too many factors that affect connection speed to just simply say that there's no difference between protocols. I doubt uploading a one-and-a-half-hour-long video via BitTorrent being the only seed will be the same as uploading it to YouTube.

BitTorrent is a good solution only if you will get enough people. And, unfortunately, nowadays not many are interested in custom maps of various quality for games that came out more than ten years ago.

How much do we need to fund every month?
Chapo
I don't really know.

Eating Pizza has paid for one year (or more). Only him has the answer and can tell us.
Safety1st
Is it possible to learn from him?
Arkshine
It's written on the site index (donation widget): 83€ / month.

Server is likely: https://www.ovh.com/fr/serveurs_dedies/hosting/173host2.xml, which is kind of overpowered for the needs.
Safety1st
80€ / month was a years. I believe required donation amount is outdated.
Arkshine
No, it's correct. The machine specs from the server console are:

- Intel® Xeon® CPU E5-1620 @ 3.60GHz
- 64 Go RAM
- 2 To HD

It matches the link above. 69 € HT = 83.99 €.

You are not going to pay 7€/month for this kind of specs. That doesn't exist.
Dedicated server on OVH starts from 72€ / month.

I don't know why Pizza took such big dedicated server, even though the site is hit hard by the bots, it's still fairly overpowered.

I guess the disk usage requirement > 500 Go is problematic. Having a VPS SSD 3 like this one https://www.ovh.com/fr/vps/vps-ssd.xml would likely enough but 40 Go is not enough, and one 500 Go additional disk costs +36 €/month. Looks like storage is very costly everywhere, but you would be already at 50.39 €/month (and you would still need more spaces). At the end, you are not far away from a dedicated server which offers 2 To with better specs. At best, we would need to pay 72€/m. And looking at others hosts, OVH is cheaper with better specs...

Current usage:
- CPU : usually < 20% (there is no statistic, but the load average is always quite low)
- Mem: usually around 5% (~4 Go)
- Disk: 28% (516.34 GB)
Chapo
Don't know if amount is correct, but I think that it must not be so far. 80€ seems to be a good price.

Hello , my name is Razvan Dinica from Iasi,Romania.
I`m an old user of this site cause is the best map finder.
I`m the founder of an community (i dont want advertising , you can ask in private details.) and i always use maps for my servers from 17buddies from years.
I can host your site for free. Indeed 387 GB i cannot put on your service.
I can host the site for free as long as the domain is valid if you find a FTP.

And i have premium on mediafire.com. 1 TB of space.
I can mirror a folder in my account.
Please consider this offer cause every time when i wanted a map , you were there to serve me and my community.

Edit : archieve is 387 GB. How much space is unpacked? I`m reseller and i can obtain also a good price for extra space needed.
Safety1st
I can afford 5-7€ per month to keep the site alive. It takes major part not only in maps itself but for GoldSrc games too, it must not die!
fr33m@n
Maybe it's time to create a new topic and post-it it in the warning news in top of the site.

Thank you for your hard work Arkshine ! wink.gif

Unfortunately a site dies when there is no activity on it. And then donating fails too ac.gif
dyablows
This site will not die , trust me.
GiGaBiTe
It'll be a great loss to the already anemic HL community if this site goes down. We've lost a number of sites and communities over the past 7 years which took with them huge amounts of content lost to the sands of time.

If the site is unable to continue, I have several terabytes of space and can absorb the content catalog to avoid it being lost forever. Quaddicted would be the best choice if you'd want the content to remain online, I would only be able to archive it in cold storage and only have small portions of it available since I don't have huge pipes to move tons of data to the internet at large.
dyablows
I`ve talked with Chapo and Arkshine , the site will not die.
I will host it and the 17buddies will remain alive.
Just wait.
Chapo
I confirm.

Dyablows seems to be honest and wants to keep the 17buddies community alive.

I am hoping there is a site like torrent where I can download all the maps and wad files at once. So I can set up a site where the public has access to them. Any help would be greatly appreciate so that I may preserve those files for everyone to use. We have a few map makers in our community and the wad files are important to there map making. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't know how popular this site is, but is it really needs 64GB of RAM and Xeon? May be the best way to save this site is purchase VPS with 16GB of RAM & 1TB HDD? It's strange that old project like this hasn't own cheap physical server, you definitly don't need powerful Xeon for storing files. In nowadays even personal computers have 3Tb+ HDD, even my four year old pc smile.gif
Secondly, is this site use background Zip compression of non-popular files to save the space?
Arkshine
Yeah, it's overpowered, EatingPizza is not here to explain, but if I had to guess, it's because with OVH you can have only one additional disk per VPS (max 500 Go). If you want more, you have no choice to get a dedicated server which starts with 2 To.

Anyway, we might have found someone who can freely host the website.

Maybe you should use cloud services like Amazon S3 for storing content files, it's not so expensive and lets you use cheapest VPS.
For ex. Amazon prices (https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/?nc1=h_ls) are:
$0.026 for storring 1GB/month
$0.0044 for 10k requests
$0.090 for 1GB traffic from cloud, first 1GB/month is free
So, if we imagine that you currently need 500gb space, 1M requests for downloading and 50Gb content traffic- it will costs 13$ + 0.44$ + 4.5$ ~ 18$/month.
Then just purchase cheapest VPS. Another good point is you will pay only for used capacity, not for all HDD.
I have a look at your OVH hosting provider site and it have some cloud solutions, at least for storing files. I guess this project is still making some litle money from ads, so maybe this solution is not so bad? smile.gif
Chapo
It will be very complicated to use the cloud to store the maps as the code has not been developed for that possibility.

All paths are "hard drive" coded and unrar/unzip/zip/check/ utilities won't work on the cloud.

This solution will certainly be possible, but only for backup purpose.

icon_jap.gif
Arkshine
Yea, this seems to be an idea to considerate, but this doesn't change the fact that the community is, unfortunately, kind of dead and no one donates.
At this point, we have no choice to rely on someone else to freely host the website and hoping that someone will take over 17B to revive the community and manage it.

As far as I understood, you have not bad guest user traffic, so can you convert it to some money by Ads?
Maybe the community is currently dead, but the main goal is to save this site as working software. So you need to optimize spending money or/and preserve your code and DB at public github or bitbucket, zip and upload content to torrent and/or free/cheap cloud.
I think it is still possible to find new young owners, who are passionate about HL games, even if he will decide to change the whole project and domain name, that will be better case, than death. There are a lot of such sites about CS/HL, so it seems the theme is still actual.

Why it shouldn't work? Storring in the cloud is just simple put|get|delete request and php works with them same way. The best way is making local 1-5 Gb cache and have a copy of popular files at local hdd to minimize requests to the cloud, so you will pay a few cents less smile.gif Here is official Amazon S3 wrapper library for php http://docs.aws.amazon.com/aws-sdk-php/v3/...am-wrapper.html
In any case you should search new owners outside of 17b community too increase the odds.
