This is a Counter Strike 1.6 mapping contest that will last from Friday, April 20th to Wednesday, June 20th at 11:59pm GMT.

Q: How long do I have to complete the map?
A: The map must be completed, and sent before Wednesday, June 20th at 11:59pm GMT.
Q: Can I use old work?
A: No, the map must be made for this contest.
Q: Can I copy paste stuff in?
A: Yes

A: If you want, but only one mapper can be rewarded.

Q: Can it be any kind of map?
A: No. Map must be a Defuse (de_), Hostage Rescue (cs_), Fight Yard (fy_), Gungame(gg_), or Aim (aim_) map.

A: Counter-strike 1.6
Q: Can I use wadinclude?
A: Yes, but only to add your signature to the map. No custom texture other than those provided in solstice.wad allowed.
Q: Can I make custom models and stuff?

A: Yes, 5MB is the largest archive size, including all necessary files.
Q: Can I use little things like models that I have made?

For a Cs 1.6 map, I think that 10Mb for the whole files (.zip archive) can be a good size.

Is 'Apps' your mapper's name?

Some mappers told me in private that 10Mb should be too huge for a CS 1.6 map.

What are you thinking about reducing filesize (perhaps to 4 or 5 Mb) ?

10Mb is only too much if custom textures aren't allowed, otherwise I don't see a problem. It says only the 17b external wad is allowed, but does that exclude using wadinclude to build other custom textures into the bsp?

April 22nd is too far away!

Sorry, I made a mistake: Summer Solstice 2012 is the 20 June, not 22 June, so contest will end Wednesday, June 20th at 11:59pm GMT (edited in first topic and banners)

You can start before 20 April, but if rules change, your work may go to trash can wink.gif

Custom textures aren't allowed: only standard wads and 17bsolstice.wad. No wadinclude allowed.

Please don't send me draft work. I want to be objective in our judgment and for the moment, i don't want to see work in progress wink.gif

You can use standard wads (cstrike.wad, halflife.wad, ...) which contain standard textures wink.gif

17bsolstice.wad is just provided in addition, for 'summer' theme.

With more textures or custom textures allowed, theme may not be respected and contest will be more easy...

So no wadinclude wink.gif

For real compile map i'm and other mappers use ZHLT tools - this tools including in map ZHLT.wad (this is special textures)

There are different versions of zhlt.wad online... please provide the one you'd like us to use or allow us to have our own 'special' .wad file with these textures. I've made my own and named it compile.wad and it contains textures like NULL, CLIP and AAATRIGGER.

Added links to mapper's maps (if present).

You just have to click on registered mappers to see their creations icon_oui.gif

Search is made by searching exact provided name, so mappers, verify that all your maps have the right mapper's name (if not you can edit name by clicking on "edit" button on each detail page, in 'summary' zone).

If you don't have maps yet, it doesn't matter: novices are welcome wink.gif

And to answer your questions:
1. Old-school, new school, it is important to create a nice map with good design and playability.
2. The team its still debating about where players should upload their maps after their done with it. Nothing to worry, we will find a special place for mappers and we will announce it. 17buddies is doing their best to satisfy everyone.

Well buddy, old-school can be described in several ways.... with default textures, with default designs, after the default maps in cs, etc. So, its interpretable. (So its not so old-school afterall) icon_biggrin.gif

We have our own texture to work with 17bSolstice.wad AND you can use this page for models: http://test.tiger.powa.fr/models/html/models.html

There is no need to upload on second party website, we got our own website (17buddies.net) to upload. smile.gif

Hi all, a question:

That troubles me a lot, I usually sign my map, with an image (wad) "Map by Max (von A) ... etc", that image is a wadinclude, that hidden somewhere in the map, however if not allow wadinclude, how I can sign my map?

Again I deeply thank you for remembering 17buddies felicitation.gif mappers we like counter-strike 1.6, see here many acquaintances, as my friend Tatu Eugen and other mappers whose maps I played many times in my server. We played yesterday your map Tizu: awp_darkcrypt (not knowing that you are one of the participants) and your map awp_dreamsereves was on several occasions in our 3on3 tournament (like any other Tatu's maps).

All excellent mappers, I wish you good luck.

Im worried for not arriving in time, because I am very obsessive... and it takes me up to 4/6 months to finish a map (de_cesky_krumlov were 6 months! LOL blush.gif ) but I play in this competition, to know this new experience.

On june, 20 th, your maps must be anonymous to be judged, but once judged, you will be able to add a wadinclude with your logo/banner/name and publish it with that signature.

Is that ok?

If not, we will be forced to allow wadinlude for mapper's signature and submissions won't be anonymous. It' s your choice icon_neutral.gif

As you can see on all pages of our site, our donation box is desperately empty, or at least doesn't cover at all the costs of our server.

In addition, we don't have any sponsors (anyway, we didn't asked for..).

So you can easily understand that we can absolutely not convert prizes in money. wink.gif

These wads are those that come with the original game and these textures are those that may be used in this contest. The only external wad that can be added is the "official" contest:

17bsolstice.wad

May also include a wad in bsp with the method of "wadinclude" at the time of compilation of the map. But only allowed to include a texture that is used for the "signature" of the author of the map, an image with a logo, a signature or banner of the author.

The remaining external textures are not allowed with this method of "wadinclude". This criterion is used to achieve a "unification" on all maps that are competing.

In my case, if I may, I will use two images for my signature that will be hidden somewhere in the map:

An image for the author's signature and a banner for my Studio "BlackDragon Project Studio", if not let me use the banner, I can unify into a single image with the signature, that depends on the organizers of the contest ...

I think limiting the use of external wads and forcing the use of one wad forces mappers to show imagination and creativity to stand out from other competitors.

Anyone (even me..icon_razz.gif ) can make a free map. Making a map with forced wads is much more complicated.

This increases the complexity and level of competition. The resulting map will necessarily be a great map especially with the very high level of registered mappers. icon_oui.gif

I added a texture to the wad so you can make a transition between the grass and sand, but as stated S3B, this is not necessarily needed.

This is precisely the difficulty of this contest where you have to find a good compromise between appearance of the map and wpolys.

Someone mentioned a texture name being duplicated in 17bsolstice.wad - there's another one called OUT_CAC2 that has the same problem. Can I also suggest adding a copy of the !mtxwater texture but without the ! at the start of the name? This would allow the texture to be used without the engine adding the usual water distortion effect.

Also, please note that there's a HUGE difference between the workload of the following gametypes:

Defuse - requires a good, well tested layout, would require lots of debugging as well.
Hostage Rescue - same as defuse.
Fight Yard - most of the time, this is a small map. Most of the time it's a symmetrical map. Requires far less effort than de/cs.
Gungame - same as fy.
Aim map - same as fy.

What I mean is that de/cs should already be in favor above the other gametypes, so consider leaving these out or have gametypes that are about the same effort to make.

They're not forcing you to use ONLY their .wad. It's just that you need that .wad for the banner. You can use the default .wad's with the default textures that comes installed with CS.

There are two types of polygons in half life:

1- wpolys (world polygons)

2- epolys (entity polygons)

Wpolys are assigned to the "square" that the HL engine divides the map. (not the number of squares that is built)
Epolys polygons are assigned to entities. (Model's, guns etc etc)

The command "r_speeds 1" serves to tell you the amount of polygons per second that the engine of half life is to draw (render speeds).

The plates are able to draw 3d x polygons per second.
When a map of r_speeds logically abused (polygons), the plates do not come 3d, and noticed the lag (sobs).

Now the Epolys Wpolys and measured with the command above. You should write to the console counter-strike:

sv_cheats 1
r_speeds 1

Please explain to me this rule:

Admins should either remove this rule or enforce this rule. I don't understand why mapping teams are allowed. Of course it's kind of hard to track if 2 or more persons are working on 1 map, but still...

Also, modeling could take more than enough time, just depends on what you would need. I might be adding a 3d skybox as I did in one of my previous maps... but something like that requires some time to make.

j'ai chercher dans tous les Fichier WAD qui sont autorisés pour ce concours mais je n'ai trouvé aucune texture
de bord de mer, j'ai remarqué que tout au début du concours avant que soit donnée la date du début vous aviez autorisé
certaines textures à être ajouté dans Fichier WAD 17bsolstice.wad
donc ma demande est simple puis-je ajouter la texture suivante 3dm_seasight05 elle se trouve dans la map cs_bikini
c'est une texture qui se marie très bien avec le sky trainyard qui se trouve dans le pack d'origine de Counter-Strike

With deep sorrow I announce that I get off the contest.

At the turn of pc was lost in the rmf which was building the map for the contest.

Map was inspired by the Greek Island of Santorini.

And I do not have much time, do not present it could end in a timely manner.

I apologize 17buddies team, especially Chapo, to S3B and all the organizers, who always lent me their support and wish you successes, this is the first in a series of wonderful competitions, thanks for believing in me, I hope not disappoint.

I want to clarify that I save the RMF. in another external hard drive, but I could not open the RMF because it gives me an error (as if he had "broken") and forces me to close the editable (RMF).

In short, the rmf of Santorini has been broken and if I want continue, I must start from scratch again with a new rmf.

Upload your map on 17b like any other map. For example, you can call it xx_17buddies_yyy (xx = de,fy,cs,..) and yyy you map name.

We will check in bsp file for included textures and if a non allowed texture is found (other than mapper's banner) map will be disqualified.

for your next contests (I hope there will be a lot icon_razz.gif) you might also consider promoting your mapping competition on thewall.de, which is a quite popular German mapping community.
By spreading the news on thewall.de you would probably reach most of the German map developers, which would most likely increase the number of participants and conesquently the number of entries.

I ,for myself, only found out about this contest due to S3B's example map, which i saw on gamebanana.com and therefore I sadly wasn't able to join earlier sad.gif

Now enough of my advertisment for thewall.de icon_razz.gif, let the judging begin and might the best entry win (which will be most likely warri's de_kassai xD).

Nevertheless good luck to everyone else, sadly there are just so few entries sad.gif

I'm looking forward to joining the next contest soon icon_razz.gif
